  • THINGS THAT YOUR HOME INSURANCE WON’T COVER

THINGS THAT YOUR HOME INSURANCE WON’T COVER

Mold: The best cure for mold is to prevent it from growing in the first place. If the basement floods after a rainstorm or a pipe is leaking, eliminate the moisture promptly, even a spill on the carpet should be dried within 24 to 48 hours.” The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says homeowners generally can clean up mold themselves if the affected area is less than about 10 square feet. Otherwise, it is best to call in an expert.

Flood Damage: water damage is covered by your homeowner’s insurance, but flood damage is not. Flood by definition is a rising body of water.

Sewer backup:  America’s sewer lines are rapidly aging, with some more than 100 years old. As more homes have been connected to these out-of-date lines, sewage backups have followed.  If you are worried about being unprotected, consider extra insurance that may be available as endorsements to your policy for risks such as sewer backups – sewer-backup damage often can be covered for an additional premium.

Wear & Tear and Maintenance:  Your home insurance policy is there to get you back to where you were before a sudden, unexpected occurrence that does damage to your home. Wear and tear and regular maintenance issues do not fall under that category.

Sinkholes: Sinkholes are sudden gaps in the earth’s surface that occur after groundwater gradually dissolves rock such as limestone and carries bits of it away, creating large pores and cracks in bedrock

Termite infestation:  If these unwanted guests cause wear and tear to your home, do not expect your insurer to bail you out because homeowners policies do not pay for termite damage

Intentional or criminal acts: (aka fraudulent claims)

Puppy antics: If your new puppy uses your leather sofa or carpet as a chew toy or potty, your home insurance won’t pick up the tab for the damage.  There are no policies that cover damage caused by pets.

Squirrels in the attic:  A squirrel is classified as a rodent, and damage by rodents is excluded under a standard homeowners policy

Earth Movement:  If the earth moves and does damage to your home, your homeowner’s insurance won’t cover you. Earthquakes and landslides are just two types of earth movement that are specifically excluded on home insurance policies

Every insurance company is a little different and what is included or excluded on your policy depends on their rules as well as the type of policy you have.  It’s important to be aware of all exclusions on the policy and to prepare yourself by purchasing additional coverage to fill the gaps where needed. Read all of the fine print on your policy so that you aren’t surprised by an exclusion once it’s too late.

At Saks Insurance, LLC., we can work with you to make sure you’ve got the coverage you need, while at the same time using all possible credits and discounts to make that coverage affordable. • Our suggestions to safeguard your home against intruders.

Our suggestions to safeguard your home against intruders.

Burglaries occur at American homes about every 15 seconds, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. You hear more and more of homes being robbed and families being held at gunpoint.

Here are some of our suggestions to help you safeguard your home:

    • Don’t advertise new purchases: By putting out boxes from a new flat-screen television, video game system, a laptop computer or other expensive home electronics at the curb, you’re showing a potential burglar exactly what new and valuable items are now available in your home
    • Keep your cell phone on and fully charged at night – next to your bed
    • Install deadbolts: The two main types of deadbolts are single and double cylinder locks. A single cylinder deadbolt, about $35, has a keyed opening on one side and a knob that can be turned by hand on the other. A double cylinder deadbolt lock, about $45, is keyed on both sides
    • Leave a light on at night, add motion detectors or lighting with timers
    • Use shades, drapes and other window treatments to keep potentially tempting household items out of view.
    • Keep an outside light on, adequate nighttime illumination is critical and will deter intruders
    • Keep doors and windows locked: Intruders can break into your home at any time
    • Add a burglar alarm: Arm the alarm at all times, again intruders can break into your home at any time – also consider adding video surveillance cameras and motion detectors to deter intruders.
    • Shrubs and trees can offer an intruder places to hide and camouflage signs of a break-in. Trim back any overgrown vegetation so that your home’s windows, porches and doors are visible to neighbors and passersby
    • Make sure your home number is visible to emergency personnel and/or the police
    • Reinforce entry points: add a security door and a peep-hole to the interior door

    Use Common Sense:

    • Never open your front door until you know the identity of the person on the other side
    • Never leave key under the door mat, in a planter or under a fake rock
    • Barking dogs also deter unwelcome or uninvited guests
    • Keep a baseball bat, a gun or a can of wasp spray next to your bed
    • If you have a security system, don’t put one of those “Protected By” stickers in your yard. That information can provide enough info to the intruders on how to disable it. Get a generic sticker.

  • Super Bowl XLIX Sunday, February 1, 2015 at University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale, AZ

Super Bowl XLIX Sunday, February 1, 2015 at University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale, AZ

Arizonians are super excited to be hosting Super Bowl XLIX, and welcoming football fans from all over the world.

Super Bowl Sunday brings with it a whole host of activities for football fans, from game-day tailgates and sports bar outings, to friendly bets and Super Bowl parties. At Saks Insurance, LLC. we want this day to be both exciting and safe, so as you cheer your favorite team to victory, consider the following tips.

    • Keep it clean: Tailgating is one of America’s favorite pastimes! If you’re tailgating, opt for non-breakable, recyclable containers. This will make cleanup easier and help avoid injuries resulting from broken glass.
    • Be smart: Whether you are tailgating, hosting a football-watching party at your house in, sitting in the stands at University of Phoenix Stadium or joining your buddies at the local sports bar, know your limit and make sure you have a designated driver.
    • Know where you’re going: Pre-plan travel to and from the stadium to avoid getting lost and to make finding parking easier if you drive.
    • Fill those bellies: Whenever alcohol is consumed, make sure food is too!
    • Be weather wise: If you’re heading to the stadium, be sure to prepare for the weather. In colder temps, bring layers and blankets (especially if you’re bringing the little ones along).
    • Keep it close: Whether you’re hitting the live games or the local tavern, be sure to keep your valuables, such as wallets, mobile phones and purses, safe. Also, keep them close (better yet, attached) at all times to avoid theft.

Wherever and however you’re watching the game, we hope you enjoy every last minute. Go team!

  • When Water Goes Where It Shouldn’t….

When Water Goes Where It Shouldn’t….

Even a small leak can become a major problem, so knowing what you’re covered for and how to prevent water damage are equally important. The below tips should help uncover any potential water problems down the road and keep your property dry.

Check the appliance hoses. Standard hoses are not as durable as they used to be. Replace rubber hoses with steel-braided hoses. This is a low cost fix that can save thousands in water damage.

Broken tiles in the shower can allow water to leak into the walls or on the floor. Replace cracked tiles and re-grout when needed.

Run dishwasher and washing machine only when you are home. If a leak occurs, you can turn the appliance off right away.

When on vacation, turn off the main water supply to your house.

Keep storm drains near your house clear of leaves.

Install a water pressure gauge. An inexpensive gauge can prevent damage caused by water pressure that’s too high. Pressure should be between 60 and 80 PSI.

  • Backpack Safety: Are Your Kids Carrying Too Much?

Backpack Safety: Are Your Kids Carrying Too Much?

There’s always a mix of excitement and anxiety in the air as kids go back to school after Christmas break, but, these days, many students constantly feel the weight of the world on their shoulders. And it has nothing to do with worrying about making friends or remembering locker combinations.

No, that weight is real, and it’s with them every day, right there in their backpacks.

Tens of millions of kids wear backpacks every day, according to the American Occupational Therapy Association. Each year, thousands of injuries occur as a result of overloading and improper fit.

So follow these tips from the American Chiropractic Association to help ensure your young student isn’t weighed down:

    • The 10 percent rule: It’s best if kids’ backpacks weigh no more than 5 to 10 percent of their body weight. The heavier the pack is, the more likely they will bend forward while carrying it, which isn’t good for their backs.
    • Get the right lift: The pack shouldn’t hang too low – never more than four inches below the waistline. A proper fit decreases the stress on the back and shoulders.
    • Two is better than one: Carrying a backpack by one strap shifts all the weight to one side and can lead to neck or muscle spasms. Be sure both straps are always in use, and that they’re also wide and well-padded. When a pack is comfortable to carry, kids are more likely to use it correctly.
    • Bigger might not be better: The more room in the backpack, the more kids will stuff into it. So find a pack that’s an appropriate size – not too big, and not too small.
    • Pack it well: You can distribute the weight more easily in a backpack that has individualized compartments. Be mindful of the area that will be against your child’s back, and avoid putting pointy or bulky objects there.
    • Ask for help: If you’re not able to get your child’s backpack down to a manageable weight, talk to his or her teacher, or an administrator at the school. Perhaps they can leave the heavier books at school and bring home workbooks or handouts instead.

School can be tough enough without having to lug around a 30-pound pack. So make sure the only heavy lifting your students need to do is with their minds.

  • Renter’s Insurance 101

    Renter’s Insurance 101

How-Much-Apartment-Can-You-AffordImagine you get back to your apartment after a long day of work to find your entire apartment flooded, and your valuable possessions ruined! Were you smart enough to purchase a renter’s insurance policy? If not, you could be facing major financial difficulties. When you rent a property your belongings are not covered under their insurance. It is important to become educated about these matters to save yourself from financial disaster in the future. Here are a few forms of coverage to look into when shopping for a renter’s insurance policy: Personal property coverage will protect all of your personal possessions in the case of a fire, storm, or water damage. Your items may even be covered if they are damaged while on the road with you! Liability coverage will protect you against legal action if someone gets hurt in your apartment. Additional living expenses will cover you in the case that your rental becomes unlivable. If a fire or other natural disaster damages your temporary home, you will need another place to live while the repairs are done.
Renter’s insurance doesn’t have to be as expensive as many policies are affordable for as low as $15 per month. Weigh that price against the price you may face if all of your belongings were lost in a fire. Renters insurance can provide you with financial peace of mind that will help you sleep easier at night.

Preparation Tips For College-Bound Kids Leaving The Nest

Sending your child off to college can be an exciting, yet nerve-wrecking time.  You want to make sure your child is prepared, but also has a fun experience. Here are a few things to think about that will ease your mind when dropping them off.
    • Does your kid know how to do laundry?  Make sure you teach them the basics.
    • How will your child access their money while away at school? Will they open up a savings account and use a debit card, or start to build credit while using a credit card?
    • Does your child understand the concept of budgeting? Work with them to figure out a spending plan.

Does your kid know how to set up a doctor’s appointment? If they become ill, you are no longer available to take care of them. Make sure they know how to locate a doctor that is covered under your insurance carrier.
    • Have you discussed academic and personal records with your child, and how they should keep/file them?
    • Go over all of the campus resources available to students at your child’s prospective school so that they will be more likely to take advantage of all of them.
    • It is always smart to send your child off with a stocked first-aid kit. Even for minor cuts, a kit can be very handy.
    • Talk to your child about evening safety when walking from one part of campus to the other. Consider sending them off with mace as an added precaution.

    • Secure a neighbor as an emergency contact. Give them the contact information for where you will be staying in case there is a problem with your home.

They can guide you through the process of buying all types of insurance policies to ensure you are getting the right coverage at the right price.
