Make Reduce, Reuse and Recycle a Part of Your Routine

Recycle logo“Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” Most likely, you’ve heard that catchy phrase connected with information about saving natural resources and even saving your family money. But how many of us really make reducing, reusing and recycling a part of our everyday life?

At Saks Insurance, LLC. we’re happy to say that we try to do our part to protect our environment and use our resources wisely. And we’re hoping you’ll take the time – if you’re not already – to make reduce, reuse and recycle part of your daily routine. Depending on where you’re starting from, it may take a change in mindset, or maybe just a little more dedication. But these tips from the Environmental Protection Agency can help.

    Reducing and reusing

    • Look for products that use less packaging. Companies use less raw material when they use less packaging, reducing waste and cost. This means that you can save money while helping to protect the environment. A great example (though it sounds at odds with “reduce”) is buying items in bulk.
    • Avoid disposable items. Take your own travel mug to the coffee shop, for instance, or bring real silverware to work for lunches, instead of using plastic.
    • Let technology help. New compact fluorescent light bulbs use far less energy than standard bulbs, and low-flow shower heads, coupled with aerators, can reduce your water use without you even noticing.
    • Invest in maintenance. When properly maintained, many items, such as appliances and clothing, won’t need to be replaced as frequently.
    • Don’t buy limited-use items. If you need something that you won’t use more than once or twice, such as a power tool, see if you can borrow or rent instead of buying.
    • Donate! When you’re done with an item, if it’s in good shape, consider donating it to a charitable organization that will sell it or continue using it. You just might get a tax deduction, too! And don’t forget, you can always buy used items as well.

    Recycling

Recycling isn’t just about putting your cans, bottles and newspapers into a bin, although that plays a big part. Here are some other things to consider.

    • Electronic waste: TVs, computers, cell phones and other electronics should not go into landfills. Many companies offer options now for proper disposal at little to no cost. Even printer ink cartridges can be recycled.
    • Food waste: In many communities, food scraps and waste are collected along with yard waste and used for composting.
    • Restaurants and grocery stores: Some establishments are beginning to offer separate bins for recyclable materials and food waste. Be sure to use these when available, and if your favorite place doesn’t offer this option, ask about it!

Though your actions may seem small, they do make a difference in the community — and the world. And when they’re combined with the efforts of millions of others, the impact is even bigger than you can imagine!

  • Holiday Tree Safety

    Holiday Tree Safety

For many people, one of the most festive parts of the holiday season is having a fresh smelling pine tree, decorated with lights and ornaments, as the focal point of the home. While it brings joy to many, it can also introduce danger unless care is taken.

In the rush of excitement of the holidays, safety precautions are sometimes overlooked. It’s important to take the time to find a safe location for the tree, and set it up in a way so that it will not become a fire danger as the days and weeks go by.Christmas scene with tree and fire in background

    A few tips include:

    – Pick a fresh tree – they’re less of a hazard than dry trees. To check for freshness, try to bend a needle – fresh needles don’t break when bent.

    – Water the tree daily throughout the holiday season to keep it fresh longer. This is especially important since it’s most likely located in a heated room, which will dry out the tree over time. Also keep your tree far away from fireplaces, heaters and radiators.

    – Lighting. As you unpack your box of holiday decorations, you may find yourself grabbing the same strings of lights you used last year and possibly the year before! It’s important to carefully examine the cords and make sure there is no wear and tear. Also check to see that all the lights are working and no wires are exposed.

    – Don’t fall! When decorating the top of a tall tree, or stringing lights across your windows, don’t use the arm of the sofa, or a wobbly side table to stand on. Bring in a step stool and use care.

    – Don’t burn wrapping paper! It may be tempting to toss the gift wrapping paper right into the living room fireplace after opening a gift, but wrapping paper burns very hot and may create large flames. These flames can cause hot embers to blow into the home, or could ignite a chimney fire.

    – How long should a tree stay up? As much as it becomes part of the home, with its lights giving the room a warm, cozy glow, a tree should be disposed of within 30 days of purchase. You can take your tree to a recycling center or have it picked up by a community service. Don’t burn the tree yourself, the needles burn very fast and hot, and could easily get out of control.

Keeping a few of these tips in mind will help you enjoy and be safe this holiday season!

  • Motorcycle Safety Checklist

    Motorcycle Safety Checklist

    Colorful motorcycles

Picture yourself on a motorcycle, guiding your ride past majestic scenery, enjoying the freedom of the road. It’s hard to see where safety features into that picture, isn’t it? But safety for motorcycles is a serious matter, one worthy of your attention if you ride.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. It’s a great time to make sure your bike is up-to-speed and ready for the road.

    • Check the frame for signs of road damage, paint lifting or cracks. Inspect the tires and wheels, looking for worn tread, bent or missing spokes, cracks, bent rims, and excess grease around seals.
    • Look for cracks, cuts or loose connections in cables and hoses. Check that chains and belts are tight, fit securely, and are lubricated.
    • Make sure the throttle, levers, stands and pedals are secure and respond to reasonable effort. Grips should turn easily when needed and not have worn surfaces.
    • Make sure your muffler is in good working order.
    • Check that the mirror is clean and provides an undistorted view.
    • Test that the battery, lights, signals and switches are in good working order.
    • Look over your personal equipment, looking for cracks, frayed fabric or holes in your helmet, eye protection, gloves, etc.
    • Keep the bike in good working order. Give it a tune-up and keep up with routine maintenance.
    • If you haven’t ridden for some time, take the bike to a parking lot for a test run. Make sure the steering is responsive, the brakes work smoothly, and your signals and lights work.
    • Take a refresher course. Community colleges and motorcycle boosters often offer these courses, which provide reminders on basic and advanced safety and accident avoidance techniques.
    • Make sure your registration, license and insurance is up-to-date. If you’ve customized or added accessories, check with your agent that the new features are properly insured.
    • If you tow your bike with a trailer, look into trailer insurance for extra protection.

When it comes to keeping safe on the road, there are a few tips to keep in mind for both motorcycle drivers and other motorists.

    For motorcycle drivers

    • Try and avoid driving in poor weather conditions
    • Use turn signals for every turn or lane change
    • Make sure to stay out of other drivers blind spots

    For other motorists

    • Allow for greater distances when following a motorcycle
    • Do not try and share a lane with a motorcycle, never try to share a lane with a motorcycle
    • Make sure to use extra caution when going through an intersection
